William was not officially named until the day we left the hospital. A couple of months ago, we decided on the name William Thomas, but we began having second thoughts just before his arrival. I think both of us were a little uneasy about making a final decision on something as important as a name. We had narrowed our options down to William, Charlie and Matthew (Matthew Thomas Garner II), but had trouble making our final decision. We were confident that we wanted the middle name Thomas, after his dad.
We both really liked one of the medical students, Catherine, who came by each morning to check on the baby. She was on her pediatrics rotation, and seemed to really like visiting William. The day before we were released from the hospital, she came in for an exam and asked what name we had chosen. We told her that he still did not have a name and that we had narrowed it down to three options. She told us that her husband and his father were both named William and went by Will. She said that if she had a son someday, they planned to name him William. Matt and I looked at each other, and knew instantly that this was the name we wanted for our son.
