Hi everyone! Sorry we haven't updated the old blog in awhile. Since we got back from Oklahoma, Matt has been working in the ICU at the VA. He works overnight every 3rd night. William and I have been bringing him dinner and visiting with him when he gets a little time.
Last week, Matt had a patient come in through the ER with shortness of breath. The ER physician called him and told him the patient had pneumonia. Before Matt had even seen the patient, he reviewed his labwork and x-rays. He noticed the sodium levels were abnormal and the patient had no fever. He also noticed the white cell count was not high, like you would expect with pneumonia. He called in his intern and showed her the paperwork. He told her that the patient needed a CT scan, because he believed he had lung cancer, not pneumonia. When the CT scan results came back, Matt had confirmation that the patient actually had lung cancer. All of this happened before he even saw the patient! Thankfully, this patient wasn't just seen by the ER staff and sent home with antibiotics.
I can see more and more every day how God has gifted Matt with amazing discernment and incredible compassion for his patients. I believe that every patient assigned to him is truly blessed to be seen by one of the best! I am so proud to be his wife and I tell William every day that he has a wonderful daddy!!
Next month, he'll be seeing patients on the floor in the VA, which means no overnight stays!! That makes Will and I very happy:)

Our best friends, Brandi and Tory moved to Jackson, MO last week:(
We got to visit their house and help them move in. Their home is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! They have a huge yard and rolling hills in the back. Tory is going to help his dad run the family farm. They farm soy beans, corn and beef cattle. Matt and I got a guided tour of the land from Tory. We were especially impressed by the HUGE combine machine that towered over our heads. It was really interesting learning how a large farm works and seeing the amazing equipment that Tory uses.
We will miss our friends a lot, but we're really happy that they found such a great place. I'm sure we will be visiting often!
Here, the boys are taking a break in the Meyr's new dining room. It opens up to a large deck on the back porch!
Brandi is holding little Sterling in the entryway of their new home.
Here is a poster that Grandma Tracy brought Matt from Belgium! It has labels from every beer sold in the area. I got chocolate and lace, both products Belgium is well-known for. Grandma Tracy got to go on a trip with the owner of her jewelry store. She went to Antwerp, Belgium to buy diamonds!! Sounds pretty amazing, huh?

Matt installed six ceiling lights in our basement last week. He read a book on electrical wiring, and installed them in just a few hours! They look absolutely amazing and really brighten up our basement. Now we can actually see what we're doing when we're working in the office:)
William had a friend over this week! Baby Emma came to visit for a few hours, while her mom, Joy, went to the hospital with Emma's grandma, who was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Emma and Joy join us several days a week to walk around the neighborhood. We are thankful to have great new friends!William likes to share his toys with baby Emma.
The buddies hung out on the quilt for a little while...
William is doing a great job sitting up now! I'm sure it won't be long at all til he is crawling!!

What a good post! Matt is lucky to have a wife who really admires him and respects the work he does! It was fun seeing where he works yesterday.
ReplyDeleteGreat sitting skills, William! Tell your Mommy to watch out because one day soon she will turn around and you will be standing at the coffee table! I think he looks a lot like Jack in the pics with Emma.
ReplyDeleteAnd good job, Matt on the diagnosis. I love that you all make a point to spend time together even with a busy schedule. Love you all!
Will looks so big sitting up! It's so cute how he was distracted by his feet, like they were moving independently from the rest of his body!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great story about Matt. We have a little 3 year old friend in the hospital with a ruptured appendix. She was sent home last week because the doctors said it was unlikely such a little one would have appendix troubles, and it was most likely a stomach bug giving her the abdominal pain. She's having a lot more trouble now that it's ruptured than she would have had if it had been diagnosed and taken out before rupturing.
